美國(guó)社區(qū)學(xué)院已有102年的歷史，社區(qū)大學(xué)起源于肯尼迪總統(tǒng)任職期間，旨在為高中生提供廉價(jià)、方便和全面的大學(xué)教育。根據(jù)美國(guó)社區(qū)學(xué)院協(xié)會(huì)的最新統(tǒng)計(jì),目前美國(guó)共有1171所社區(qū)學(xué)院，其中公立的992所，在經(jīng)濟(jì)上依靠百姓納稅的支持。全美國(guó)有44%的大學(xué)生在社區(qū)學(xué)院就讀,其中學(xué)分制與非學(xué)分制學(xué)生各占一半;63%為兼職學(xué)生，37%為全職學(xué)生。社區(qū)學(xué)院的使命包括五個(gè)組成部分—轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)教育、職業(yè)生涯教育、一般教育、補(bǔ)償教育以及社區(qū)教育。
 
中國(guó)人熟知的美國(guó)前總統(tǒng)曾這樣說(shuō)過(guò)：“Community colleges are America at it’s best”(社區(qū)大學(xué)是美國(guó)最棒的)。美國(guó)是當(dāng)今世界高等教育的發(fā)達(dá)國(guó)家，也是世界上第一個(gè)進(jìn)入高等教育大眾化階段的國(guó)家。在這個(gè)進(jìn)程中，基于美國(guó)人崇尚平等的特點(diǎn)，能最大程度的滿足不同層次學(xué)生對(duì)高等教育需求的美國(guó)社區(qū)大學(xué)教育體系應(yīng)運(yùn)而生。
 
哪些學(xué)生適合報(bào)考社區(qū)大學(xué)呢?
一是高中期間的GPA不夠理想的申請(qǐng)人，或者標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化語(yǔ)言考試托福/雅思成績(jī)不理想，但是又想去美國(guó)接受高等教育的學(xué)生，社區(qū)大學(xué)給他們提供了一個(gè)學(xué)習(xí)的平臺(tái)，很重要的是，它還提供了往名牌大學(xué)轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)的機(jī)會(huì)，對(duì)這些學(xué)生們來(lái)說(shuō)這個(gè)跳板是很有價(jià)值的。

另外一種情況就是申請(qǐng)人希望能接受美國(guó)的職業(yè)化教育，在短期內(nèi)就拿到文憑，并學(xué)習(xí)實(shí)用性強(qiáng)的專業(yè)知識(shí)，這種申請(qǐng)人也可以考慮美國(guó)的社區(qū)大學(xué)。

社區(qū)大學(xué)有下列三個(gè)主要職能：
1.轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)教育。美國(guó)社區(qū)學(xué)院為有志于到大學(xué)繼續(xù)學(xué)習(xí)的高中畢業(yè)生開(kāi)設(shè)兩年制的課程，轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)教育提供大學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位的前兩年課程，大學(xué)承認(rèn)社區(qū)學(xué)院的學(xué)分，能成功地轉(zhuǎn)入公立或私立的四年制大學(xué)，同時(shí)還提供其他選修課程。幾乎所有的美國(guó)大學(xué)均接受從社區(qū)學(xué)院轉(zhuǎn)入的學(xué)生。社區(qū)學(xué)院拿了前兩年的學(xué)士學(xué)位課程(副學(xué)士學(xué)位)，然后轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)到四年制大學(xué)以便完成第三及第四年課程，故此學(xué)生從四年制大學(xué)得到一個(gè)學(xué)士學(xué)位。

2.職業(yè)技術(shù)教育。這是社區(qū)學(xué)院的教育重點(diǎn)，它的培養(yǎng)目標(biāo)是專業(yè)技術(shù)人員或?qū)I(yè)熟練勞動(dòng)人員。

3.成人教育或繼續(xù)再教育。主要為在職人員進(jìn)修或補(bǔ)修某些課程。選學(xué)課程的規(guī)定和學(xué)習(xí)的時(shí)間的長(zhǎng)短非常靈活，可以全日學(xué)習(xí)，也可以業(yè)余學(xué)習(xí)。社區(qū)學(xué)院承擔(dān)了更多的終生學(xué)習(xí)的義務(wù)，他們不限次數(shù)地向想重新學(xué)習(xí)的人敞開(kāi)大門。

對(duì)于廣大中國(guó)留學(xué)生來(lái)說(shuō)，美國(guó)社區(qū)大學(xué)是個(gè)不錯(cuò)的選擇
首先，與私立大學(xué)、州立大學(xué)相比，社區(qū)大學(xué)的費(fèi)用可以說(shuō)非常經(jīng)濟(jì)實(shí)惠。社區(qū)大學(xué)的年平均學(xué)費(fèi)為兩千多美元，普通公立大學(xué)的年均學(xué)費(fèi)接近六千美元，社區(qū)大學(xué)的學(xué)費(fèi)不足公立大學(xué)的一半。不僅如此，如果學(xué)生上社區(qū)大學(xué)，學(xué)校離家較近，食宿費(fèi)用上也可以節(jié)省很多。其次，社區(qū)大學(xué)的申請(qǐng)入學(xué)條件要求，一般都比四年制大學(xué)低，所以學(xué)生較易申請(qǐng)入學(xué)。

再次，大部分四年制大學(xué)只允許外籍生每年入學(xué)一次，而社區(qū)學(xué)院通常每學(xué)期都可以讓學(xué)生入學(xué)，有的一年可以四次入學(xué)。最后，學(xué)生在完成社區(qū)大學(xué)兩年的課程后可以選擇轉(zhuǎn)到四年制大學(xué)繼續(xù)深造，社區(qū)大學(xué)的學(xué)分被四年制大學(xué)認(rèn)可，并有機(jī)會(huì)申請(qǐng)轉(zhuǎn)至名校就讀。

而且，社區(qū)大學(xué)的課程設(shè)置是根據(jù)社會(huì)需要所設(shè)置的，正如比爾.蓋茨所說(shuō): “Community colleges have always been driven by what is most relevant to the employment market”(就業(yè)市場(chǎng)的需求推動(dòng)了社區(qū)大學(xué)的發(fā)展)。社區(qū)大學(xué)的課程設(shè)置最大程度上反映了就業(yè)市場(chǎng)的需求，勢(shì)必為學(xué)生將來(lái)的就業(yè)帶來(lái)幫助。

美國(guó)社區(qū)大學(xué)的錄取條件比普通四年制大學(xué)要低，一般高中成績(jī)?cè)?0分以上都符合要求,無(wú)雅思、托福等語(yǔ)言成績(jī)同樣可以申請(qǐng)入學(xué)。學(xué)生入學(xué)后需要參加數(shù)學(xué)和英語(yǔ)測(cè)評(píng)。未達(dá)到標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的必須參加補(bǔ)習(xí)班，然后才可以選修對(duì)數(shù)學(xué)和英語(yǔ)有一定要求的課程。補(bǔ)習(xí)班實(shí)際上是對(duì)高中成績(jī)較差學(xué)生的補(bǔ)救課程，也是讓更多的學(xué)生達(dá)到大學(xué)入學(xué)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的變通辦法。有不少成年學(xué)生由于各種各樣的原因，沒(méi)有在高中畢業(yè)后直接升入大學(xué)，在工作了幾年之后希望返回到校園時(shí)，通常首選社區(qū)大學(xué)。當(dāng)然也有個(gè)別高中成績(jī)不錯(cuò)的學(xué)生，出于經(jīng)濟(jì)原因選擇了社區(qū)大學(xué)。
