2017-2018年Common App重大改革：學(xué)生可邀請(qǐng)校外升學(xué)顧問輔導(dǎo)

 　　Common Application，美國(guó)大學(xué)通用申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)，簡(jiǎn)稱CA，是美國(guó)本土及國(guó)際申請(qǐng)者一站式完成大學(xué)申請(qǐng)材料的公用申請(qǐng)平臺(tái)。申請(qǐng)美國(guó)本科，大部分學(xué)校需要通過 (通用申請(qǐng))系統(tǒng)來完成申請(qǐng)。

　　CA作為一個(gè)平臺(tái)，意在簡(jiǎn)化美國(guó)大學(xué)本科申請(qǐng)步驟，每年都會(huì)根據(jù)新的申請(qǐng)形式和趨勢(shì)做出適當(dāng)?shù)恼{(diào)整和改動(dòng)。前不久，CA就公布了最新2017-2018年的申請(qǐng)文書題目，其中2題新增，3題修改，2題不變。

　　CommonApp 2017-2018年度最新文書題目變化

　　Common App表示，題目改變的目的是為了幫助申請(qǐng)者能通過這些題目找到共鳴，更好地分享自己的故事。縱觀這幾年的文書題目變化，有大改也有微調(diào)。有時(shí)可能是怕問得太虛無縹緲，申請(qǐng)者不好回答;有時(shí)可能是擔(dān)心學(xué)生寫跑偏了，所以做了限定;有時(shí)是想到了一個(gè)更新的角度去了解學(xué)生……不管怎樣，這都是為了讓招生官更多更好得了解申請(qǐng)人。

　　今年的題目具體有哪些變化?學(xué)生應(yīng)該選什么題目動(dòng)筆?本文給你詳細(xì)解讀一番。

　　【題目1】Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.(沒有變化)

　　有些學(xué)生有非同一般的背景、身份、興趣或才能，這是他們不可缺少的一部分。如果你也有同感，請(qǐng)分享你的故事。

　　解讀：這是了解申請(qǐng)者的入門題。“Identity”(身份)是個(gè)比較抽象的概念，很多學(xué)生拿到手之后并不知道如何理解，因此從2015年開始，添加了更加具體的“背景”“興趣”“才能”，幫助學(xué)生尋找選題。這是一個(gè)百搭題，沒有設(shè)定太多限制。很多學(xué)生都會(huì)選擇這個(gè)題目，但要寫出彩也不容易。如果文書立意不夠精細(xì)，很大幾率轉(zhuǎn)不住招生官的眼球，淪為申請(qǐng)中的分母。

　　【題目2】The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? (微調(diào))

　　我們從挫折中學(xué)到的經(jīng)驗(yàn)對(duì)之后的成功至關(guān)重要?；貞浤阋淮文忝鎸?duì)挑戰(zhàn)、阻礙或者失敗的經(jīng)歷。它是如何影響你的，你從中學(xué)到了什么?

　　和去年的題目對(duì)比一下：

　　The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

　　解讀：去年的“failure”(失敗)，特別容易寫成一部悔過書。此次弱化表達(dá)為“obstacles we encounter”(我們所遇到過的挫折)。并且也把incident/time更具體為challenge(挑戰(zhàn)), setback(挫折), or failure(失敗)。仍然是一個(gè)CA常見的表達(dá)變化，沒有實(shí)質(zhì)變化。

　　解題思路：招生官想從這道題看出你的性格特點(diǎn)，你面對(duì)挫折、失敗和挑戰(zhàn)是什么態(tài)度，采取了什么行動(dòng)，并最終得到了哪些成長(zhǎng)。因此，這道題的關(guān)鍵在于分析失敗原因且做出了一系列的改變，不要一味單純描述失敗。

　　【題目3】Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? (微調(diào))

　　回憶一次你質(zhì)疑或挑戰(zhàn)某種觀念或想法的經(jīng)歷。是什么啟發(fā)了你的思考呢? 結(jié)果如何?

　　2016-2017的題目是：

　　Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

　　解讀：和去年的act相比，今年的thinking可能顯得簡(jiǎn)單一點(diǎn)。但招生官還是看結(jié)果的(outcome)。

　　這道題是挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威/成見，強(qiáng)調(diào)了學(xué)生的批判性思維能力，一般中國(guó)學(xué)生選得相對(duì)比較少。

　　如果你選這道題，需要注意critical thinking或者challenge a belief 不是代表你要全盤否定某個(gè)想法。世界不是非黑即白，很多學(xué)生在這道題目容易寫得極端，這是不可取的。招生官希望看到的是：你怎么去權(quán)衡兩個(gè)極端的。另外，忌寫一讀開頭就讓人想到結(jié)尾的文章。

　　【題目4】Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.(無變化)

　　描述一個(gè)你解決過或者打算解決的問題。這個(gè)問題可以是學(xué)術(shù)方面的、研究調(diào)查或者是道德倫理方面的——任何你認(rèn)為對(duì)你個(gè)人而言很重要的問題，不論大小。說明它對(duì)你的意義和你解決問題的方法。

　　解讀：這種sense of community近幾年來美國(guó)招生官非常地看中，看加州系統(tǒng)和新CAAS系統(tǒng)文書就知道了。每個(gè)都有一個(gè)題目是和community相關(guān)的。

　　這道題目招生官最想看到的是你們problem-detecting和problem solving的能力，非常適合工科類、不愛肆意抒情的學(xué)生選擇。這里大家很容易走入的誤區(qū)就是：This problem should be big, significant, probably saving the whole society. 答案是否定的。你們是高中生，他們不會(huì)expect you to be a perfect person( 無所不能的學(xué)生)，你這么厲害還來上什么大學(xué)呢?所以還是文書的原則，你必須以小見大。從小事兒出發(fā)。另外這道題目來講，建議大家可以思考的是我身邊有什么可以解決的問題呢?我可以為我的community帶來什么的。

　　【題目5】Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. (微調(diào))

　　描述讓你成長(zhǎng)或者讓重新認(rèn)識(shí)自己或他人的一個(gè)成就、事件、或者感悟。

　　對(duì)比一下2016-2017題目：

　　Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

　　解讀：題目把關(guān)鍵詞“adulthood”換成了一段解釋：sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.(激起了你的個(gè)人成長(zhǎng)與對(duì)自己或他人的全新了解)，重點(diǎn)從個(gè)人成長(zhǎng)(personal growth)，變?yōu)樽约夯蛘咚俗屇阌懈形虻氖虑?，范圍變寬。很多學(xué)生在寫的時(shí)候，很容易忽略自己的“ethnic” 特色。也就是自己的地域特色。我們完全可以從這點(diǎn)出發(fā)。選這個(gè)題目，反思是非常重要的，如果寫不出深刻的reflection,不建議選擇這個(gè)題目，不然只會(huì)寫出讓招生官覺得shallow的文章。

　　【題目6】Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? (新增)

　　描述一個(gè)讓沉迷其中，甚至忘記時(shí)間的話題、想法、理念。它哪里吸引你? 當(dāng)你試圖去了解更多的時(shí)候，你會(huì)求助于什么樣的幫助?

　　解讀：這道題招生官希望看到applicants的學(xué)習(xí)動(dòng)力以及學(xué)習(xí)能力，考察他們?nèi)绾卫蒙磉叺馁Y源來學(xué)習(xí)。這道題目適合有著強(qiáng)烈專業(yè)興趣的學(xué)生選擇。這可能跟“Why Major”系列撞車，目測(cè)寫的人不會(huì)特別多。

　　【題目7】Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. (新增)

　　任選話題寫一篇短文。它可以一篇是你過去所寫的文章，文章題目不限，可以自創(chuàng)。

　　這道題目看似簡(jiǎn)單，但是這7個(gè)里面最難的。因?yàn)槿绻惆l(fā)現(xiàn)自己寫的東西和其它6道題目都有沾點(diǎn)邊兒，但是你選了7，會(huì)有種possibility讓人覺得你寫的東西很散。還不如選擇一個(gè)題目去寫。但是如果有著豐富的想象力，寫小說，寫詩(shī)的同學(xué)可以大膽地選擇這個(gè)題目。但是還是要和自己的counselor溝通，畢竟自己覺得有趣的小說和詩(shī)，只是主觀的想法，一定要和counselor或者peer溝通。

　　斯坦福錄取的學(xué)生寫的文書是怎樣的?

　　申請(qǐng)文書很重要。它是你展示個(gè)性和特質(zhì)的媒介。 你是一個(gè)富有幽默感的數(shù)學(xué)天才，還是一個(gè)愛思考的，有著天馬行空想象力的寫作好手，都要通過個(gè)人申請(qǐng)文書來表現(xiàn)。題目出來了，構(gòu)思寫好卻是一個(gè)艱難的過程。文如其人，好的文書往往能讓招生官看到的時(shí)候會(huì)心一笑，心里已經(jīng)給這學(xué)生點(diǎn)贊了。下面我們就來看看斯坦福大學(xué)校報(bào)刊登的一篇文章，文章摘錄的是2012級(jí)新生在申請(qǐng)文書(個(gè)人陳述)中的第一句話，看完你就能明白為什么斯坦福要錄取他們了。

　　例一：Unlike many mathematicians, I live in an irrational world; I feel that my life is defined by a certain amount of irrationalities that bloom too frequently, such as my brief foray in front of 400 people without my pants.

　　翻譯：與很多數(shù)學(xué)家不同的是，我生活在一個(gè)非理性的世界里。我覺得我的生活是由一定量的，爆發(fā)過于頻繁的不合理因素構(gòu)成的。比如說，我曾在400多個(gè)人面前，沒穿褲子，短暫的逗留了一會(huì)兒。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這個(gè)學(xué)生明顯是要闡述自己在數(shù)學(xué)方面的興趣，但是在個(gè)性方面又顯得十分活躍，不同于其他數(shù)學(xué)天才的呆板。申請(qǐng)委員會(huì)肯定會(huì)印象深刻，有興趣接著往下讀，他沒穿褲子到底是怎么回事。

　　例二：Sitting cross-legged on the floor of a Bhimanagar slum dwelling in Bangalore, I ran my fingers across a fresh cut on my forehead.

　　翻譯：盤腿坐在印度班加羅爾市的一個(gè)貧民窟里，我用手指輕輕撫摸著額頭上一道剛剛刻下的傷痕。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這篇申請(qǐng)的第一句話就表明這個(gè)申請(qǐng)者的人生經(jīng)歷很不尋常，至少比一般的高中生豐富很多。同時(shí)，這第一句話還制造了一個(gè)懸念，讓人忍不住讀下去，看個(gè)究竟。

　　例三：When I was 8 years old, I shocked my family and a local archaeologist by discovering artifacts dating back almost 3,500 years.

　　翻譯：在我八歲的時(shí)候，我讓我的家人和當(dāng)?shù)氐目脊艑W(xué)家大吃一驚，因?yàn)槲野l(fā)現(xiàn)了距今有3500年歷史的文物。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這個(gè)人應(yīng)該是要申請(qǐng)人類學(xué)，歷史系或者考古系的專業(yè)。第一句話就在宣稱我在這個(gè)方面很牛。

　　例四：I had never seen anyone get so excited about mitochondria.

　　翻譯：我從沒有見過任何人對(duì)線粒體感到如此興奮。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：我查了字典，所謂線粒體(mitochondria)是細(xì)胞生物學(xué)的一個(gè)概念，我相信即使是一般的美國(guó)的大學(xué)教授(相關(guān)領(lǐng)域的除外)也得查一下字典才能認(rèn)識(shí)這個(gè)單詞。短短10個(gè)英文單詞就表明了這個(gè)申請(qǐng)者是哪一方面的牛人，關(guān)鍵是這個(gè)人對(duì)這個(gè)領(lǐng)域還有很高的熱情。

　　例五：I have old hands.

　　翻譯：我有一雙蒼老的手。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：我和我的美國(guó)同事一致認(rèn)為這個(gè)是最牛的第一句話。因?yàn)閮H僅用了四個(gè)最簡(jiǎn)單的英語單詞，就營(yíng)造出了出其不意的效果。想象一下，申請(qǐng)者都是17，18歲的高中生，什么樣的人會(huì)有“一雙蒼老的手”呢?

　　例六：Flying over enemy territory, I took in Beirut's beautiful skyline and wondered if under different circumstances I would have hopped on a bus and come here for my vacation. Instead, I saw the city from the window of a helicopter, in military uniform, my face camouflaged, on my way to a special operation deep behind enemy lines.

　　翻譯：飛越敵占區(qū)的時(shí)候，我看著貝魯特美麗的天際線，心想是不是換一個(gè)環(huán)境，我會(huì)跳上一輛旅游巴士來到這里度假。實(shí)際情況是，我是透過直升飛機(jī)的舷窗來俯瞰這座城市，身著軍裝，臉上涂著迷彩，正深入地后方去執(zhí)行特殊任務(wù)。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這個(gè)就像一部好萊塢大片的開頭部分，讓人不禁猜想這個(gè)申請(qǐng)者到底是什么樣的資歷，她/他到底經(jīng)歷了什么?如果斯坦福錄取了這個(gè)人，是不是很有面子?

　　例七：Some fathers might disapprove of their children handling noxious chemicals in the garage.

　　翻譯：有些父親也許不會(huì)允許他們的孩子在車庫(kù)里擺弄有毒的化學(xué)品。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這個(gè)人大概是要申請(qǐng)化學(xué)系，因?yàn)楹苊黠@，她/他來自一個(gè)對(duì)化學(xué)很狂熱的家庭。

　　例八：I was paralyzed from the waist down. I would try to move my leg or even shift an ankle but I never got a response. This was the first time thoughts of death ever crossed my mind.

　　翻譯：我從腰部以下都癱瘓了。我努力想要?jiǎng)右幌挛业耐然钪_踝但是身體毫無反應(yīng)。自殺的念頭在我腦海里閃過。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：注意，所有的表達(dá)都用的是過去時(shí)，說明這位申請(qǐng)者已經(jīng)完全度過了這個(gè)階段，但是到底發(fā)生了什么，我相信錄取委員會(huì)的人一定會(huì)很關(guān)注的。

　　例九：As an Indian-American, I am forever bound to the hyphen.

　　翻譯：作為一個(gè)印度裔美國(guó)人，我這輩子都跟連字符脫不了關(guān)系。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：英語里Indian-American有一個(gè)連字符，這位申請(qǐng)者用這個(gè)符號(hào)巧妙地富有幽默感地來了一句，就像說相聲一樣抖了個(gè)包袱。

　　例十：I have been surfing Lake Michigan since I was 3 years old.

　　翻譯：我從三歲起就在密歇根湖上沖浪了。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：這個(gè)申請(qǐng)者明顯很有體育天賦，三歲起就在五大湖之一的密歇根湖上沖浪了。如果在體育方面有特長(zhǎng)，拿過全國(guó)性的獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)，學(xué)習(xí)成績(jī)又十分優(yōu)秀，那么被斯坦福大學(xué)錄取就是輕易而舉的事情了。

　　例十一：On a hot Hollywood evening, I sat on a bike, sweltering in a winter coat and furry boots.

　　翻譯：在一個(gè)炎熱的好萊塢的夜晚，我坐在一輛自行車上，穿著一件冬天的大衣和毛茸茸的靴子，汗流浹背。

　　點(diǎn)評(píng)：一句話，就點(diǎn)明了時(shí)間，地點(diǎn)和人物，還充滿了矛盾沖突。這個(gè)開頭還是挺引人入勝的。

　　集知識(shí)性和趣味性于一體，非常具有可讀性。

　　選好素材，以小見大，用事實(shí)說話要遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)勝過空喊口號(hào)。

　　4月10日Common Application申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)又做了一些改革，增加了一些功能

　　和Google云盤整合

　　這一變化模仿的是CAAS申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)的Locker功能。和Google云盤整合，學(xué)生將能上傳文件、簡(jiǎn)歷、作業(yè)以及擁有申請(qǐng)的補(bǔ)充資料等。而且，在申請(qǐng)的時(shí)候，學(xué)生可直接調(diào)用存在谷歌云盤上的申請(qǐng)材料。美國(guó)很多高中學(xué)校都采用Google文檔和Google云盤，學(xué)生和教師能夠在有網(wǎng)絡(luò)的情況下創(chuàng)建和訪問共享文檔。這大大方面了美國(guó)高中老師和學(xué)生之間的協(xié)作。功能雖好，但國(guó)內(nèi)還需要翻墻才能使用。

　　Google Drive Integration: Students will now be able to easily access and upload documents, resumes, and school assignments while completing the Common App and the college-specific sections of the application. We know that many school districts have adopted Google Docs and Google Drive to enable their students and teachers to create, collaborate, and access shared documents from any internet connected device. We also recognize that some students do not always have personal computers at home but use Google Drive on school or library computers to store their documents. We want to meet students where they are. By using the systems that they are already using, we are making the process more accessible for students.

　　學(xué)生可邀請(qǐng)校外升學(xué)顧問輔導(dǎo)

　　這是今年CA申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)的一個(gè)重大變化，依然是基于CAAS聯(lián)盟申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)功能模仿的。之前學(xué)生可以邀請(qǐng)?jiān)谛Ｉ龑W(xué)顧問參與申請(qǐng)過程，而2017-2018年開始，通過CA系統(tǒng)遞交申請(qǐng)的學(xué)生，還可以邀請(qǐng)校外資源，比如校外的申請(qǐng)顧問、獨(dú)立咨詢顧問及社區(qū)組織(community-based organizations)輔導(dǎo)自己的申請(qǐng)。

　　CBO, Advising, and Recommender Enhancements: Students receiving support from advising and community-based organizations will be able to work with those counselors just as they work with their school-based counselors and teachers within the application. These individuals will then be able to manage their caseloads and view student progress within the Common App system. In addition, any student who wishes to do so will be able to share a view of their in-progress application with their school counselor, CBO counselor, or other advisor.

　　Courses & Grades

　　一些大學(xué)要求學(xué)生在申請(qǐng)過程中自行填寫課程和成績(jī)分?jǐn)?shù)。CA新增Courses & Grades功能，意在將成績(jī)遞交流程精簡(jiǎn)、標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化。通過Courses & Grades，申請(qǐng)人自己可以填寫高中課程和高中成績(jī)，而填好之后，CA會(huì)進(jìn)行整合，從而方便了學(xué)生、顧問和學(xué)校這三方。這一功能目前還在測(cè)試中，將在2017年8月1日后正式啟用。

　　Courses & Grades: Many students are required to submit self-reported high school academic records when applying to some colleges and universities. With Courses & Grades, students will be able to fill out their self-reported transcript information as part of their Common Application. By integrating the Courses & Grades section into the Common App, those students who are already sending this information will be able to complete and submit it with their Common App, making the process of self-reporting transcripts more standardized and streamlined for students, counselors, and colleges.

　　Courses & Grades was developed from the feedback of member institutions, high school students, and counselors. The Common Application hosted a series of student and counselor focus groups with beta testing to determine how to make the self-reported transcript process accessible and efficient. Courses & Grades will launch in limited release on August 1, 2017.

　　西班牙語版

　　為了方便第一語言是西班牙語的學(xué)生申請(qǐng)，CA系統(tǒng)的主要信息會(huì)被翻譯成西班牙語，家長(zhǎng)和其他家庭成員可以更好地了解大學(xué)錄取過程。

　　Spanish Language Resources: Key information for using the Common App will be translated so that students, parents, and other family members who speak Spanish as their first language can better understand the college admission process, including applying for financial aid and receiving virtual mentoring. This new tool will also benefit counselors who will be working with these families and will need Common App materials in Spanish.

　　另外，CA系統(tǒng)又加入了一些新成員校，目前總共有740所高校使用該申請(qǐng)系統(tǒng)。新增的成員校名單如下：
